Summer is in full swing for those of us in the Northern hemisphere. I’m sure you’re feeling the heat and dreaming of dipping your toes in the sand (probably also true if you’re knee-deep in winter in the Southern hemisphere!).

I also know how challenging it is to find the time (or the 💰) to retreat from daily life and take a vacation.

I had the same problem many years ago when I was overwhelmed, trying to start my business as a new yoga teacher. I enlisted the help of a friend who coached me through a “staycation.”

Now, this was before a staycation was even a thing!

She had to trick me into it. You probably know the scenario…when you’re so overwhelmed you’re convinced you can’t stop working, even though that’s exactly what you need to do? Yeah…that was me, too.

Her advice was to commit to doing a few simple things for two weeks:

  • Check email for only 30 minutes once per day (use a timer!)
  • Commit to a daily spiritual practice
  • Book a self-care appointment once per week (massage, haircut, yoga class)
  • Start your day by journaling – perhaps write down 3 things you are grateful for
  • Exercise daily
  • Sign up for a class or course to learn something that you love
  • Engage with like-minded individuals as often as possible

I kinda lost it when she told me. It seemed like an impossible task at the time. Her promise to me?

Her: “It’s only for two weeks! When you’re done, you can go back to being super busy and overwhelmed.”

Hehehe….well, I bet you can guess how the conversation went two weeks later.

Me: “Oh my goodness, I feel SO relaxed! I don’t really want to go back to my “old life” tomorrow.”

Her: “Well, that’s good. Because I was going to suggest you keep up this “staycation” … for the rest of your life.”

Me: 😳

The greatest thing about this new way of living is that both my happiness and productivity increased like crazy. I would never have believed it…until I experienced it.

I want you to experience this, too.

For the next 7 days, take a “staycation” per the guidelines above.

I promise, nothing bad will happen…quite the contrary…only good things will come of it!
